Know Better = Do Better….NOT!

‘It will be better this time’ has to be the core thought that keeps us trying. This thought keeps people in the dating game. It causes people to enter into a second marriage. It causes people to go look for a job again after they have been let go. It is this very thought that causes us to keep trying everything that we have ever tried before.

If we simply change the order of the first two words in this statement, it has a dramatic affect on our lives: ‘Will it be better this time?’

The asking of this question has caused many to not try again, but if we answer it with honest assessment, this question may ensure that it will be better this time.

We want our lives to be better, especially when we are trying the same thing for the second time. But how do we make sure this time is better than last time?

There are several things that can help with this, but one of the major obstacles to making sure this time is not a repeat of last time is believing this lie: I know better so I will do better. The knowledge of better doesn’t guarantee we will do better.

My three children are young adults and one thing I remember them saying during a lecture was ‘…I know, I know, I know…’ They did, and they still do know, right from wrong. But knowing right from wrong does not mean you will automatically do right.

YOUR LIFE IS NOT ON AUTOPILOT.

What you know can help with what you do, but it does not dictate what you do. We are a very educated society, but we keep repeating mistakes.

So, to assure it will be better this time, you must have a plan for better.

  • First, honest evaluation of last time must take place. Take responsibility for your part in last time’s failure. (Write it down, evaluate, reevaluate.)
  • The key to success this time is to know what is and is not in your control. If you can have more control this time, take it.
  • Lastly, put more eyes on the plan this time. The last failure may have happened because you honestly can’t handle it on your own.

Pro 12:15  The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.

Love God, Love Others, Live Obediently,

Pastor
